Scrabble has been regularly been played in various institutions and clubs from late 60's till around 1990 when Goa had an open scrabble tournament . Later around 1998 V. Damaraj known as first promoter of of official scrabble along with Shaik Ahmed from Hyderabad started moving across the country holding scrabble clinics and workshops for adults and children. They followed it up with club level and state level tournaments in a few states. A few All India tournaments were held as well as the National Scrabble Championships were organised from 1998 sequentially
This then led to a greater movement amongst the scrabble playing fraternity culminating in the formation of the All India scrabble body which we now know today as the Scrabble Association of India. From then onwards in 2003 the organised scrabble activity moved fast uphill in conduct of the state championships, National Championships, International Tournaments and finally culmionating in the World Scrabble Championship 2007 in Mumbai from 8th to 12 th November by Mattel Inc and Mattel U.K. in collaboration with the Scrabble Association of India.
